I gave this one four stars because while it's certainly well done there are other of his books that are far better. Sweden is not the scene of the kind of crime we have here. A Department of Sensitive Crimes is probably fictional but in that culture, its altogether probable. It fits right in with Smith's gently poking fun at his fellow humans. Ulf Varg, the driver of the silver Saab, is the lovelorn head of his department. He also loves his dog Martin but he takes a dim view of his brother the political iconoclast. He understands family dynamics and this helps him solve the crimes that come to his attention as they often involve parents, siblings and spouses. While dealing with Martin's unhappy encounter with a squirrel, and subsequent botched reattachment of his nose, Varg is investigating a possible art forgery. The solution of this crime is not what you'd think (it never is) Varg is an art lover so he's only too happy to spend some time with the Malmo art crowd. There are rivalries and extramarital affairs, unrequited love, odd characters and dilettantes galore. In the end Varg finds a new girlfriend and rescues a critic's reputation. Perhaps not a shootout or a ticking time bomb, but satisfying just the same. Apart from aphorisms and aphoristic observations, there the the usual excellent character development to be expected by AMcCS. Humor is mixed with insight and mystery.Ready for the unfolding of the next book!
